Common questions

How many working hours are in a year?

The standard figure is 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week across 52 weeks. It is what most employers use to convert salary to an hourly figure. It stops being accurate the moment you take unpaid leave, work overtime, or regularly work more or fewer than 40 hours. This calculator replaces 2,080 with the hours you actually work, which is the only way to get a real hourly rate.

Does overtime change my effective hourly rate?

Yes. Overtime paid at time and a half raises total pay faster than it raises total hours, so your effective rate goes up. Five overtime hours a week at 1.5× on a $30 base rate lifts the effective rate from $30.00 to about $30.94 and adds roughly $11,700 a year. Straight-time overtime leaves the effective rate unchanged but still raises annual pay.

Why does unpaid leave lower my real hourly rate?

Because the quoted annual figure assumes 52 paid weeks. If two weeks are unpaid, the same annual amount is earned over fewer paid weeks, so annual pay falls while the rate per hour worked stays the same. Converting a salary to an hourly rate using 2,080 hours when you were paid for 50 weeks overstates the hourly figure by about four percent.

Should I compare offers on hourly rate or annual salary?

Convert both to the same basis and use the real hourly rate: total annual pay divided by the hours you will actually work. Salary alone hides unpaid extra hours, which is how a nominally higher salaried role ends up paying less per hour than the hourly job it replaced. Also check overtime eligibility, because hourly roles are generally covered by overtime rules in a way salaried roles above the exemption threshold are not.
